by Jeff Salsack, Times Staff WriterIn an announcement that would be welcome news for land animals in a drought, land rover manufacturer Massey’s landed on the scene in California.
Massey announced Thursday that it had secured a $500 million investment from private investors and will begin construction on a large new space habitat for land animal researchers.
The facility, named the Sea Mammal Reservation, will house research teams in a facility designed to accommodate up to 50,000 animals, including the sea lion and sea lion subspecies, the company said in a statement.
The development comes as the United States grapples with record-breaking drought conditions and a nationwide food shortage that has killed thousands of people.
A number of studies have linked the high water levels to increased risk for the deaths of wildlife.
Masseys plans for the new habitat are expected to begin construction this year.
Masys main focus is on improving the safety of its employees in the field, said John McElroy, Massey CEO.
“We are looking at every aspect of the facility and we are making sure that our staff has the best safety practices possible,” he said.
The land rover will be one of the largest land animal facilities in the world.
The company said it expects to be the largest in the U.S. with at least a quarter of a million animals.
The project is expected to cost $100 million and be complete in 2023.
Massey’s land rover, known as the Sea-mammal Residence, will hold the largest animal habitat on the planet.
It will house a research team of 20,000 to 30,000 land animals.
It’s designed to be able to withstand the extreme conditions, including high-pressure and ice conditions.
The company said that a team of researchers working in the facility will work for four years to develop a long-term solution to climate change, including a climate-resilient habitat for the sea lions.
“The team will be led by Dr. John McNeill and Dr. Michael Hough, the director of the Massey Marine Mammal Institute, the largest marine mammal research center in the United Kingdom,” Massey said in the statement.
“This will be the first time a marine mammal institute in the UK has been designed and built for this purpose.”
Massey said that the research team will also have the opportunity to study the effects of climate change on sea lions, and that they will have access to the world’s largest collection of sea turtle eggs.
The turtles hatch from their shells, which is stored at sea.
Masks research has led to an important discovery, the statement said.
